Saving Philippine Reefs

Every year, dive enthusiasts around the world volunteer their time, energy, and resources as research associates in reef monitoring expeditions around the Philippines. Data collected contributes to improved MPA management.

Project description

Saving Philippine Reefs is one of CCEF's oldest projects. Started by Dr Alan White in the 1980s, SPR brought groups of divers to Tubbataha Reef, Apo Island, and the reefs in the Mabini - Tingloy area in Batangas. SPR has the oldest, continuous dataset of coral reef observations in the Philippines. After every trip,a Summary Field Report is published by CCEF and given to managers for their use.

A lot of foreign-based SPR volunteers come back to dive every year. There are some who have been coming back regularly for more than ten years because they know that dive conditions here are excellent.

Since 1983, Tubbataha Reef has been visited eight times already. The knowledge gained during the Tubbataha expeditions only made it clearer how important the reef's contribution is to our fisheries. That is why CCEF (known back then as Sulu Fund) spearheaded the construction of the Ranger Station found in the North Atoll of the Marine Park.
