History:
The University of San Carlos - Marine Biology Section (USC-MBS), initiated the project of taking care and developing the seas of Bantayan Island. The project was launched on February 15-17, 1995, a seminar-consultation was conducted together with the creation of the first Coastal Resource Management at Kota Beach Resort, Sta. Fe, with representatives from three municipalities of the Island; Sta. Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos and from thr Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research Development (PCAMRD) and USC personnel. The program was a five yr (5) implementation plan, placed in Barangay Atop-atop, Tamiao and Sillion. With the government implementing agencies from Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-PCAMRD, Local Government Unit of Bantayan, Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine National Police (PNP), with Non-government organizations (NGOs) and from private sector like the Hydra Shells Corporation, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), German Development Service (GDS), and the Community Based-People's Organization w/c played the biggest part of implementing this. The program composed of 3 components: 1) Resource Assesment and Environmental Monitoring Component; 2) Socio-economic and Community Development; and 3) Mariculture Component.
